You know the excitement that you get when you pull out your winter coat or an old pair of jeans and realize there’s a $20 bill in the pocket? You feel rich! Sadly, I think this only happened to me once and it was only a $5 bill, but still. It’s money I didn’t have yesterday!
Today I’m here with a little public service announcement.
Have you ever heard of unclaimed property? It’s money that is owed to you by companies, past employers, insurance companies and even the government – but for whatever reason they haven’t been able to send it to you. Sometimes it’s an old address or perhaps you changed your name. The money is still yours, and all you have to do is claim it! And where can you find this unclaimed property? You can go to your state’s department of treasury website and search, or you can go to this national listing of unclaimed property. You enter in your name and information and it pops out a list of potential unclaimed property that could be yours. I did it last week and found that I had $200 of unclaimed property from a previous employer from almost 10 years ago!
From the site you will be directed to the state treasurer’s website where the property is at. You will fill out a form, provide some documentation and send it away. Then just wait and watch my mailbox every day for my little money windfall!
